Critical Observations Written by Medical Students on Patient Assessment

Keywords: Medical Records, evaluation and critical attitude analysis, medical specialized languages, academic and professional writing

Abstract

This research analyzes the critical remarks by third and fourth year Chilean medical students in the Final Remarks/Observations section of the Medical Records with the aim of understanding the opinion of their experiences of their clinical rotation and medical practice in general, as well as to understand the rhetorical-discursive elements they use to position their voice in the written text when evaluating these experiences. To investigate this phenomenon, a computerized text analysis of grammatical categories and evaluative semantic-functional content was carried out from a qualitative inductive-deductive approach. The results of the study indicated a majority of positive critical remarks, which focused on the patient's state of health, their attitude towards the illness, the treatment received, and the doctor-patient relationship. Additionally, there were observations on the medical profession. The attitude markers, which were mainly adjectives, were preferably used for the evaluation of the content.
