Intensification and attenuation values of the Spanish discourse marker bueno in oral corpora

Keywords: Sociolinguistics, discourse marker, intensification, mitigation

Abstract

In this work a sociopragmatic study of the discourse marker bueno as an intensifier or de-intensifier in spoken Spanish is carried out based on two oral corpora: one of vernacular speakers from Granada (Spain) and one of Ecuadorians inmigrants in the same city. This research establishes the influence of social variables such as speaker’s level of education, age or origin on the face-related uses of the discourse marker object of study. The results show that half of the occurrences of bueno in the corpora have a face-related function, mostly, of attenuation; that these uses are associated to further educated and vernacular speakers; and that the discourse marker as an intensifier is characteristic of the oldest group.
