On gender doublets and related grammatical issues

Keywords: generic masculine, non-sexist language guides, inclusive language, syntactic constructions with problematic doublets

Abstract

This work analyzes the various jugdgments on the gender doublets that non-sexist language guides and manuals have raised, especially from the “Bosque Report”. It also examines issues related to the incorporation of these doublets in different types of discourse and the difficulties posed by their application in certain syntactic contexts. To do this, in addition to examining some of the approaches that non-sexist guides and manuals propose on the use of doublets, I have reviewed opinions offered by academic papers, blogs, newspaper articles and linguistic columns on the validity or usefulness of gender doublets. I have also considered the image they offer on the incorporation of its use in various domains. Finally, I have analyzed and illustrated with sentences taken from the Internet some of the linguistic difficulties that have been associated with the aplication of gender doublets in certain combinations and syntactic contexts
