Translatability of humorous phraseological units in the audiovisual genre
Abstract
In this article we present an investigation on the translatability of humorous phraseologies in a multimodal genre such as sitcom. One of the most difficult phenomena to translate is humor. Moreover, phraseological units are also one of the most complicated linguistic units to transfer to another language. If we combine both concepts, humorous phraseology, it becomes one of the most arduous tasks where a translator is involved. According to Zuluaga (2001), in the translation process of phraseology it must be identified, analyzed and sought the best equivalence in the target language. Starting from this premise, we will carry out the opposite process, that is, we will select the humorous sequences of the dubbed version in which the humor is generated through a phraseological unit and we will check what humorous resource was in the original version so that the translator choose to use a phraseology. As a conclusion, we can affirm that, in most cases, translator has chosen an equivalence of phraseologism in meaning and form.
