Requests in Spanish and German colloquial conversation: an approach to their types and forms
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to offer a preliminary description of direct and indirect requests for action and information in Spanish and German colloquial conversation. Although this type of directive acts has previously been investigated by means of discourse completion tests or role playing, examining them in face-to-face interaction through reality shows remains highly unexplored. Analysing everyday situations from Gran Hermano 17 and Big Brother 12 allows therefore to observe qualitative and quantitative similarities and differences, which shed light on the preference for the various types of requests and reveal the distinct values attributed to (in)direction in both languages.
