The diminutive in Dominican Republic Spanish

Abstract

The aim of this research is to analyse the use of the diminutive suffix in an oral corpus of young people in the Dominican Republic. It is based on the transcript of twenty oral interviews in the nineties in Santo Domingo. In this work, it is carried out a study of the registered occurrences, their morphology, users’ preferences with regard to the selection of the different types of words taken as the basis for diminutive formation, their possible semantic and communicative values and, finally, it is established the frequency of use of diminutives according to speakers’ gender.
