Political euphemism taken to the extreme: the Bárcenas affair
Abstract
This paper analyses the different argumentative strategies used in political discourse by Spanish Partido Popular in 2013 to defend themselves from some accusations that affected its public image in the so-called “Bárcenas case”. We will focus on the linguistic hiding and mitigation mechanisms carried out by those involved in this case to make up a reality that hurts their personal image and the image of their group. We also analyse the role played by the media and social networks in this case and we will study if evasion and hiding really served to achieve the objectives of the speakers.Downloads
