Image management in presidential speeches: J. M. Aznar and J. L. Rodríguez Zapatero
Abstract
The following article situates itself within the field of political discourse analysis. It deals with the State of the Union Speeches of two former Spanish presidents, J. M. Aznar (2001, 2002, 2003) and J. L. Rodríguez Zapatero (2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011). Our analysis focuses on monologic speech acts containing verbs in 1st person sg. and pl., which, despite the formal and little spontaneous character of these speeches, can be found on utterance level as well as on discourse level. Modality plays an important role in our analysis, since it allows for a deeper insight in the communicative strategies involved. Based on Spencer-Oatey’s model of autonomy and affiliation in discourse, special interest is paid to how these rhetorical strategies contribute to the discursive construction of speakers’ face, which can be considered to be the most relevant concern of political discourse.Downloads
