Abstract

Comment clauses have characteristics similar to pragmatic markers, and may constitute an earlier stage in their evolution. Their features prototypically include parenthetical distribution, mobility and syntactic marginality. However, there are contexts in which subordination conjunctions are maintained, especially in comment clauses with epistemic verbs in first person. In this paper macrosyntax of these intermediate stages is analysed in detail in order to contribute to the development of discourse grammar.
