Pragmatic aspects and interculturality in doctor-patient communication: a study from Discourse Analysis and Speech Act Theory

Keywords: conversation analysis, pragmatics, interculturality, Public Service Interpreting (PSI)

Abstract

Public Service Interpreting and Translation (PSIT) is a discipline with a strong social link, which field of application is influenced by the shifting migratory flows, and which manifests itself in guaranteeing access to public services for the migrant population. Thus, the Intercomsalud project (PID2022-137506OB-I00) aims to solve communication problems between healthcare professionals and non-native speaker migrant patients. Within the framework of this project, the aim of this article is to carry out an analysis of the communicative interactions between healthcare professionals and patients in interlinguistic and intercultural contexts. In order to achieve this aim, a methodology based on discourse analysis will be followed, given its close relationship with sociolinguistics and the benefits that the use of this type of analysis can bring in the framework of the discipline of PSIT. The particularities of the doctor-patient interaction, as well as the linguistic strategies used by an interpreter in a specialised context, will be analysed, to contribute to the field of Discourse Analysis in the setting of PSIT, where communication is key.
