Abstract

This text analyzes the participation of women from the social elites in the artistic culture of  early modern Spain using the information contained in the Museo pictórico y escala óptica, published in Madrid between 1715-1724 by Antonio Palomino (Bujalance, Córdoba 1655-Madrid 1726). The first part looks at the presence of women in this treatise, which, while being comparatively limited, does nevertheless provide important information on women and the artistic culture of the time. The second part considers the specific cases of high-born women in Spain through an analysis of their preserved works, relating the theories expressed in the treatise to the material traces of their artistic production. In this way, the traditional view of these women as exotic rarieties or as mere amateurs is questioned and the role of women in the artistic culture of their time reconsidered.
