Exemplary discourse, memory, and Creole identity in two biographical works by Juan Antonio de Oviedo, S.I. (18th Century)

This article analyzes the elements that make up the Creole discourse of exemplarity in two historiographical texts written by Juan Antonio de Oviedo (1670-1757) in the first half of the 18th century. These works, by addressing a broad sector of the Creole elites, transferred to their readers the values and ideas of a letrado and Catholic Creole subject, contributing to the construction of the culture and identity of this colonial subject. In the adaptation of Spanish models to New Spain, the Creole colonial discourse incorporated aspects of scientific knowledge from the Arts –logic, natural philosophy, metaphysics, astronomy, and mathematics– as another element of their identity.

Foxes, Lions, Griffins: Reflections on the Construction of the Modern State in Genoa

This article investigates the characteristics of the oligarchic structure of the aristocratic Republic of Genoa through an interpretation that, going beyond the usual logic of the dualism between new and old nobility, relies on the Pareto categories of foxes and lions to define the formation of an ‘oligarchic oligarchy’ holding the main prerogatives of power. A working hypothesis that finds some initial confirmation in the correspondence between two Genoese nobles around the relations of the Republic with the newborn Duchy of Parma, where a peaceful modus vivendi is reached hinged on the transfer of the exchange fairs to Piacenza.

Pragmatism between wars. The Irish nation and the Army of the Spanish Monarchy (1690-1700): three examples of transition

The historiography on the presence of the Irish in the armies of the Spanish monarchy has made significant progress over the past twenty years. Consequently, it is now possible to affirm that soldiers of Hibernian origin were present in Spanish forces from the mid-16th century to nearly the late 18th century. However, specific periods still lack systematic studies, as it has been rightly presumed that the Irish presence was minimal. Among these is the final decade of Charles II's reign. Nevertheless, the available documentation allows for the reconstruction of the cursus honorum of three officers whose cases exemplify the capacity for adaptation during a transitional juncture.

The emergence of female viceregal power in the face of death: the case of Catalina de Giudice y de la Sierra, marchioness of Cayro and vicereine of Navarre (1765-1770)

The vicereine consorts, because they had not been assigned to the position, did not have associated duties and powers. However, they practiced an informal power of representation. Baroque funeral celebrations, scenes full of theatricality in which the force of the symbolic reached its maximum expression, were a key place for the exercise of figurative power by the vicereines. Through a comparison with the royal funerals held in Navarra and other examples of funerals of viceroys and vicereines, the funerals of the Navarrese viceroys, Marquises of Cayro, are analyzed. The active participation of Catalina María Peregrina de Giudice y de la Sierra in the funeral of her husband, Luis Carlos Antonio González de Albelda y Cayro, and the testamentary opinions surrounding her own death tell us about a vicereine who, despite her condition as a consort, he had an active role in the human and political government of the navarrese viceroyalty in the mid-18th century.

Ossian’s poems and the creation of the culture of Constitutionalism: the translation of Alonso Ortiz in context

The first translation into Spanish of James Macpherson's Ossian Works published in 1788 by José Alonso de Ortiz has been historiographically treated as secondary, although it plays an important role in the political history of culture at the end of the 18th century. Starting with an approach to the original text and restoring it to the specific context of the Scottish Enlightenment in which it acquires meaning and attains notable validity with a powerful political message, its translation into Spanish is analyzed, attempting to deploy a double contextualization task: on the one hand, that of the intellectual itinerary of the translator himself, with special mention of the series of translations surrounding this initiative, including a work that never saw the light of day due to its political texture, the Histoire des Révolutions d'Angleterre by Pierre-Joseph d' Orléans, and others of greater scope, with special mention of his translation of An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith, the first complete translation into Spanish; and on the other hand, that of contextualizing Ossian's translation in the coordinates of the debate that is going through the gestation of the culture of constitutionalism in the Spanish-speaking world. On the basis of these operations, conclusions are drawn in which it is of interest to situate the way in which the conception and understanding of the nation in the Hispanic case may have been literary rather than political.

Routes, ports and memories. An approach to the construction of the Mediterranean seascape in the Spanish rutters of the 17th Century

Although not much examined by the maritime historiography dedicated to the Mediterranean Sea, the derroteros are a unique source for studying different aspects related to its navigation in the early modern age. The content of these works consists of practical information for the journey through a certain maritime space, where, in addition to the description of its routes, ports, or coastline, they add a set of histories or anecdotes from the past that were associated with specific places. This research analysis five rutters linked to the Catholic King’s navy in order to examine how they constructed a particular image of the Mediterranean seascape, examining their authors and the manuscript itself to judge their intentionality, and assessing their potential for a better knowledge of the Mare Nostrum and its inhabitants.

Old and disabled soldiers. Profile of the veteran of the Spanish Army in the first half of the 17th Century

The aim of this article is to present the typical war veteran of the Spanish Army in the first half of the 17th century. Two basic characteristics that the text will focus on are the duration of the service and physical wounds and health problems. The source base of this study consists of petitions submitted by soldiers to the Council of War, now deposited in Archivo General de Simancas. This is intended to present the war veterans of Spanish Tercios as a new social group in Early Modern Period that caught the attention of administration.º

To represent is to spend: the chronic indebtedness of Manuel de Sentmenat during the Embassy to Portugal (1691-1698)

In the following lines we will delve into the economic universe of international relations by analysing the financial structure of Manuel de Sentmenat y de Lanuza during his period as envoy extraordinary (1691-1696) and ordinary ambassador (1696-1698) of the Spanish monarchy at the court of Lisbon. First of all, we will reconstruct the position and the date of the diplomat, analysing the income and expenses of the embassy. We will also examine the relationship of dependence he had with his main lender, Henri Vannertingue, who became the embassy's main financial guarantor. Finally, we will reconstruct the embassy's balance sheet, highlighting the chronic indebtedness it suffered, as the expenses incurred far exceeded the income received.
