Edición crítica y traducción de la Epistula lugubris et mesta simul et consolatoria de infelice expugnatione ac misera irruptione et inuasione insule Euboye dicte Nigropontis de Rodrigo Sánchez de Arévalo (1470)
Abstract
Critical edition based on all extant witnesses, two incunabula and seven manuscripts, together with Spanish translation, of the letter sent by Bishop Rodrigo Sánchez de Arévalo to Cardinal Bessarion in which he offers him consolation for the recent fall of the island of Euboea, also called Nigroponte, in the hands of the Turks on July 12, 1470. The letter had an extraordinary diffusion due to the extension of the printing press and the political interest of the subject: the Christian West was beginning to be aware of the real threat that the advance of the Ottomans represented. It was the last work written by the Spanish bishop, who died several months later
