How to take care of the oxen after ploughing (COLVM. 2.3)
Abstract
The paper examines in depth two questionable readings in COLVM.2.3, i.e., oportet sibiloque/salibusque and substrictos confricet, which it proposes to replace, respectively, by oportet et suaui loquela and subinde extractos consideret. We also uphold to keep et of the manuscript tradition in quia et genus morbi..., although a second et is added, as follows: quia et genus morbi et maxime est armentis noxium. Finally, we make some considerations on the critical work in editing old texts (mainly Columella’s Res rustica).
