Art Therapy and evolution of emotional aspects and anxiety in an oncohematological context: a case study

Abstract

This paper presents the results obtained from an intervention programme through the Art of an oncohematological patient without transplantation. This case has been extracted from a study of a sample of 8 subjects which was divided into: (1) 4 subjects for the Experimental Group (EG), who undertook the 8-session therapy, the STAI questionnaire and the evaluation questionnaire and (2), 4 for the Control Group, with a similar profile to the previous one, who did not attend the therapy but did undertake the STAI questionnaire. This work only shows the results obtained from the case study subject, which reveal significant differences in anxiety levels between the pre-test and the post-test and, also, a significant decrease in unpleasant emotions and an increase and improvement in pleasant ones at the end of the therapy.

Author Biographies

María Méndez Suárez, Universidad de Extremadura

María Méndez Suárez (Badajoz, Spain, 1976) holds a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Valencia and a PhD from the University of Extremadura, where she has been a lecturer since 2008. Her research focuses on methods based on the visual arts and she develops educational and social intervention projects based on the arts, health and social welfare. She has led several teaching innovation projects and is currently the principal investigator of the research group ‘Theoretical-practical innovations applied to interdisciplinary research in arts education’.

Telma Barrantes Fernández, Universidad de Extremadura

Telma Barrantes Fernández (Cáceres, Spain, 1988) has a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Granada. She has a Master’s degree in Art Therapy and Artistic Education for social inclusión from the Autonomous University of Madrid, and also PhD in Education from this University. She teaches at the University of Extremadura since 2019. Her research focuses on art therapy for nephrology patients and social inclusion. She is currently part of the research group ‘Theoretical-practical innovations applied to interdisciplinary research in arts education’. She has been part in some teaching innovation projects and manages the research committe of the Ibero-American Art Therapy Forum (AFIA).
