Abstract

The article provides a conceptual overview of mental health and art therapy. In relation to mental health, we address the pillars that support it, such as the concept of rationality, the processes to achieve subjectification and the experience of the self. To do this, we take a tour of the theorization from different authors. A conceptual development is addressed about the experience and awareness of Self, subjective identity, storytelling process, creation process and mental health.

In relation to art therapy, the art therapy process and projective dynamics and image creation are described. Art therapy makes the journey from surrealism to the concepts of psychoanalysis of the psyche and the creative unconscious, taking its basis in the always continuous process of creating meaning and strengthening the capacity for connection. The essential aspects of art therapy and its contribution to the evolution of the concept of mental health are also described.
