Amateur photography in Spain: concepts, historiography and methods
Abstract
This article presents a historiographical review of amateur photography in Spain, a practice traditionally overlooked by academia that, nevertheless, elevated this medium to a significant cultural and social phenomenon. To achieve this, the definitions and nuances of the term are examined and compared with related concepts, such as vernacular, familiar, amateur or non-professional, in addition to reviewing connotations in similar fields. Additionally, the article provides an overview of the history of photography in Spain to explain the reasons of this historiographical gap and to summarize recent contributions in the field, with particular emphasis on proposals from the discipline of art history. Finally, it outlines some methodological approaches from other scientific fields that are necessary to build a critical, flexible and integrative framework for accurately analyzing the work of these creators and their visual production.
