The book as an autobiographical proyect: editions by Fortunato Depero
Abstract
Depero futurista 1913-1927 and Fortunato Depero nelle opere e nella vita were essential publishing projects in Fortunato Depero’s career, as they summarised his creative process and established a biographical balance. The artist considered that the book fulfilled an essential mission in achieving recognition of his creations during his lifetime. This article analyses Depero’s editions of books and other publications from the point of view of pre-avant-gardism, the Futurist seduction and irruption, the influence of other artistic movements, his detachment and distancing from the avant-garde and the assessment of his career in which he aimed at his recognition as one of the Italian masters of the twentieth century. The article concludes that his publishing projects responded to transcendent creative periods that were extrapolated to his work due to the influence of other agents. The books and editions he designed serve to establish his biographical profile in relation to his historical context and were decisive in the recapitulation and projection of his artistic legacy.
