The horror of the everyday in 'El huésped y otros relatos' by Amparo Dávila. Interview with illustrator Santiago Caruso
Abstract
Santiago Caruso is an Argentine illustrator who stands out for his discursive complexity and the vigor of his technique. His work has been exhibited in museums and galleries in Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, the United States, the United Kingdom, Spain and France. He has made covers for Tartarus Press, Actes Sud, Planeta, Sudamericana and Foam Pages. His most outstanding works are the illustrated editions of La metamorfosis (Alma), La condesa sangrienta (The Red Fox), El horror de Dunwich (The Red Fox), El conde de Lautréamont ( Valdemar), Materia oscura (author's edition) among others. The sinister, the strange and the inexplicable are the hallmarks of his poetics. In this interview we talk about The Guest and other sinister stories by Amparo Dávila that he illustrated for Fondo de Cultura Económica in 2018. In both Dávila and Caruso, the fantastic is a way of exploring the cracks of reality. This work unleashes a dialogue between text and image about the ways of articulating and understanding the reality that concerns any reader-viewer.
