Panoramic Shows: A Precedent to Public Screens
Abstract
Panoramic shows began to be exhibited since the end of the 18th century and represent the conception of a new way of seeing and understanding reality. These devices can be understood as a precursor to the screens offered in immersive exhibitions. This article attempts to develop the role that these public entertainments had, taking the city of Madrid as a case study, from the beginning to the middle of the 19th century, to establish what analogies precede the new audiovisual shows in which the role of screens, immersion, together with virtual reality strategies, configure a new visual regime that, in a certain way, was instituted in panoramic attractions since the end of the Enlightenment. For this purpose, a methodology has been established based on the content analysis of news that appeared in the press of the time, which has allowed us to glimpse the qualities of these shows and allow them to be compared with new audiovisual entertainment where screens and their illusion effects are the fundamental axis. of its receptive attraction.
