Call for papers: Remakes of artistic projects in motion: tailored nostalgia in cinema, series, and video games
Remakes of movies, video games, animated, and live-action series have been present in
the industry almost since the beginning of its formation. From early adaptations to current reimaginings, remakes have not only revitalized classic projects, but have also
redefined the way gamers and viewers interact with the industry's past. In this context,
Espacio Abierta is pleased to announce the opening of the call for academic articles
focused on remakes of digital art in motion, with a special focus on its connection with
nostalgia, memory, reimagining of experiences, adaptation, and its influence on
contemporary society. Also how the making of these remakes changes from time totime depending on said society, focusing on how they adapt to people to facilitate their understanding.
The practice of reimagining and reinterpreting video games, films, and series has been a
constant throughout history. From the first adaptations to new platforms to the current
high-fidelity graphic remakes, the industry has demonstrated a unique ability to revisit
and revive its creations. In their beginnings, remakes focused mainly on overcoming
technical limitations, allowing classic games and films to adapt to new platforms and
emerging technologies.
However, over time, remakes evolved beyond a simple technical update, introducing
significant innovations, brave rewrites of the source material, or complete changes to
the art or gameplay style. This evolution has led to a new understanding of remakes as a
way to preserve, but also to adapt to the expectations and memories of those who
played, watched, or otherwise enjoyed the original title.
In this context, we invite academics, experts, and professionals to contribute their
analyses and reflections on remakes of any type of project. We are especially interested
in exploring the relationship between remakes, nostalgia, and contemporary society.
Therefore we accept topics related to:
- Remakes in video games, fiction series, or movies
- The nostalgia associated with remakes
- Impact of the re-imagination of works of fiction for society, culture, and
memory
- Comparative, narrative, aesthetic, and artistic analysis between remake and
original work
- Influence of society and social generations on the creation of remakes
- Impact of the remake on the process of creating new works
