Children’s perceptions of their habitat in urban informal settlements, Valparaíso, Chile

Keywords: Childhood, urban informality, Valparaíso, residential habitat, urban precariousness

Abstract

This research presents the perceptions of children about their housing and environmental conditions in an impoverished neighborhood of Valparaiso (Chile) shaped by social processes of production of habitat. The results show that children and adolescents clearly identify problems in their home, immediate environment, and neighborhood, highlighting both the feeling of insecurity they feel in public spaces and the lack of equipment designed for them. When contrasting these results with the perceptions of adults, there are some differences. Especially regarding the prioritization of problems and their appraisal of the neighborhood. This issue opens new research questions about the role that children have in the informal habitat, as well as in the processes of social production of the environment, both processes usually described as participatory and horizontal in the literature.
