Abstract

The recent publication of the translation into Spanish of the German bestseller “Die Vermessung der Welt” offers a wonderful opportunity for studying the possible equivalencies in Spanish of a very typical structure in the German language. This is the use of modal verbs with a directional complement that depends directly on them. Examples of this structure in the German text will be compared with the corresponding passages in the Spanish translation.
