The contestant's jouney. Television Quiz Shows and the Hero’s Journey
Abstract
Considering Campbell’s, Vogler’s, and Sánchez-Escalonilla’s scholarship on the concept of Hero’s Journey, this research focuses on the study of television programmes’ narratives based on a question/answers model or, in other words, Quiz show’s narratives. For this purpose, the present study has applied this lens to a significant sample of Spanish Quiz shows, used as case studies, in comparison to fictional stories with narratives based on this paradigm. This has ultimately allowed to establish a parallelism between both, uncovering structural and semantic similarities between epic fictional storylines and the case studies explored. In addition to these findings, the research has also contributed this field’s scholarship with the design of a useful research matrix based on the Hero’s Journey specifically applicable to quiz shows, known as the contestant’s journey.
