Television has traditionally been the main source for citizens to find out about news related to the environment and ecology. This work reviews some previous scientific works that demonstrated this and contrasts them with the most up-to-date data, extracted from the Environmental Profile in Spain (2021), the Survey of Social Perception of Science and Technology of FECYT (2022) and the Observatory of Information Quality on Television (OCITV) (2023). The results not only indicate that the Internet has surpassed television as a source of environmental information; in addition, new ecological themes discussed in current television programs are classified, as well as their peculiarities and impact on citizens. Finally, the work points out some keys that could enable better, more informative television, without losing the entertainment bias and allowing it to compete with the Internet -websites, blogs and social networks.
Elvira Calvo Gutiérrez Copyright (c) 2024 Historia y Comunicación Social 2024-05-29 2024-05-29 29 1 17 25 10.5209/hics.94306 Blue communication in regional and local administration: The case of the Andalusian Regional Government and Malaga City Council https://revistas.ucm.es/index.php/HICS/article/view/94099
The concept of Blue Communication arises from the need to categorise a new way of transmitting knowledge and dissemination, hand in hand with the Blue Economy (Pauli, 2010). The objective is to analyse Blue Communication in the Andalusian (Department of Sustainability, Environment and Blue Economy) and local (Department of Sustainability and Environment of Malaga City Council) public administration through their Facebook profiles; in addition to the media coverage of two media (Diario Sur and Ideal de Andalucía) for seven months. A methodology has been designed that integrates a formal-descriptive, thematic and interaction analysis of own and earned media. A positive and informative treatment of the topic is identified, as well as an evaluation of errors.
Gema Lobillo Mora Mariana Lozano del Águila Copyright (c) 2024 Historia y Comunicación Social 2024-05-29 2024-05-29 29 1 27 40 10.5209/hics.94099 Presence and framing of climate change in the digital press of Uruguay https://revistas.ucm.es/index.php/HICS/article/view/95821
Nearly 80% of Uruguayans perceive a low presence of climate change in the press (PNUD Uruguay, 2021). This article analyses how digital media in Uruguay inform about and frame climate change and identifies opportunities for improving journalistic coverage of the issue and of the National Climate Change Policy. The content analysis reveals, among other findings, lack of emphasis in scientific explanations of and potential technological solutions to the problems of climate change, policy measures that are unattended by the media and quasi non-existent use of audiovisual content to inform. The article concludes with recommendations on how political authorities and the media can communicate about climate change so that citizens may understand the phenomenon and their relationship with it.
Juan Manuel Gari Victoria Gómez Álvaro Pérez Álvarez Copyright (c) 2024 Historia y Comunicación Social 2024-05-29 2024-05-29 29 1 41 55 10.5209/hics.95821 Communication strategies for sustainability and the circular economy in the digital editions of Spanish fashion magazines https://revistas.ucm.es/index.php/HICS/article/view/93243
The fashion industry is highly polluting due to unsustainable manufacturing processes and the use of unsustainable fabrics. To change this paradigm and seeking the use and consumption of recyclable and more environmentally friendly materials, the role of digital fashion magazines is essential. The general objective of this study is to describe and analyze the treatment of sustainability and the circular economy in the main Spanish fashion magazines, identifying the communication strategies used, using a mixed methodology based on content analysis. This shows a constant and transversal presence of these issues, but often linked to promotional strategies of the brands and through celebrities.
Francisco Javier Ruiz del Olmo Mireya Carballeda Camacho Copyright (c) 2024 Historia y Comunicación Social 2024-05-29 2024-05-29 29 1 57 66 10.5209/hics.93243 Narratives about the 2030 Agenda at the Madrid Assembly https://revistas.ucm.es/index.php/HICS/article/view/94308
As a public forum, the duty of the Assembly of Madrid is twofold: on the one hand, to reflect the feelings of its citizens and, on the other, to work for the common good to improve the lives of the citizens of Madrid. To this end, we propose a situated approach to primary sources, the integration of secondary sources as well as the conjunction of the perspective of macro and microanalysis of oral history, to defend a much greater and prolonged role in time of women, for whom the Francoist model of femininity was erected in an exclusive tool of "sexual repression".

In this context, the daily survival carried out to a large extent by women, far from being submissive acceptance of their social, generic and family destiny, provides us with new arguments to build history "from below" with vital trajectories of resistance and dissidence.
Matilde Peinado Rodríguez Copyright (c) 2024 Historia y Comunicación Social 2024-05-29 2024-05-29 29 1 89 98 10.5209/hics.95823 The representation of the other as an enemy. Secondly, what I call Period Movies with Comic Effects as a second group; and as a third one, what I call New Era Comedies, which are exponents of the Spanish cinema renovation. Like the novel, the film directed by Margarita Alexandre and Rafael María Torrecilla suffered the consequences of censorship, giving rise to two versions: a Spanish one (La ciudad perdida) and an Italian one (Terroristi a Madrid). This research has made it possible to identify substantial changes between the two films that affect such important aspects as the script and editing, and which are linked to the construction of the image of the two main protagonists, Rafa and María. It is a language and a narrative that produces images and representations. And in all of them, women are hypersexualized, thus setting in motion intense processes of commodification of their bodies. Men are represented as active beings with the right to satisfy their sexual desires. They are shown as subjects and women as objects. The pornographic imaginary is in reality a libertine imaginary in which men can access women's bodies without conditions, without prohibitions, without limits. Porn is the most resistant symbolic core of the misogynist imaginary, and at the same time it makes it possible to draw the map of sexual violence.
Rosa Cobo Bedia Copyright (c) 2024 Historia y Comunicación Social 2024-05-29 2024-05-29 29 1 135 140 10.5209/hics.95826 Age, aging and ageism in Julieta (2016) by Pedro Almodóvar https://revistas.ucm.es/index.php/HICS/article/view/90616
We analyze Julieta (Pedro Almodóvar, 2016) from her age theme. There are three major characters: a man who commits suicide, a housekeeper, and the father of the protagonist. In parallel, we witness the aging of three characters, two who are retiring and a third, the protagonist, who goes from an extroverted and joyful youth to a mature woman psychologically dejected by the loss of her husband and the flight of her daughter, events for which she will blame herself. With these presuppositions, Almodóvar establishes a series of contrasts with the ages, breaks some ageist stereotype and maintains some of the characteristics of his characters. For this purpose, the present study has applied this lens to a significant sample of Spanish Quiz shows, used as case studies, in comparison to fictional stories with narratives based on this paradigm. This has ultimately allowed to establish a parallelism between both, uncovering structural and semantic similarities between epic fictional storylines and the case studies explored. In addition to these findings, the research has also contributed this field’s scholarship with the design of a useful research matrix based on the Hero’s Journey specifically applicable to quiz shows, known as the contestant’s journey.
Sergio Toledo Aral Inmaculada Gordillo Copyright (c) 2024 Historia y Comunicación Social 2024-05-29 2024-05-29 29 1 179 188 10.5209/hics.95829 Representation of women in authoritarian Chile. An approach from advertising https://revistas.ucm.es/index.php/HICS/article/view/92116
The objective of this article is to analyze advertising directed at women in the context of the dictatorship in Chile (1973-1990). In retrospect, advertising constitutes a valuable testimonial resource and is an eloquent expression of the transformations that Chile underwent during the authoritarian regime before neoliberalism expanded to other regions. Using a mixed methodology that combined content analysis and semiotics, the results reveal a modernizing emphasis within the female consumer imaginary, associated with the values of the imposed neoliberal order that positioned consumption as one of the main drivers of social relations. However, this proposal did not significantly alter the roles that advertising has traditionally assigned to women. The conclusion drawn is that advertising reflects both the modernizing dynamics of the time as well as the contradictions and conflicts inherent in the stereotypical representation of women in the media.
Enrique Vergara Leyton Liliana De Simone Paulina Gómez-Lorenzini Claudia Labarca Antonia Guevara-Iturbe Copyright (c) 2024 Historia y Comunicación Social 2024-05-29 2024-05-29 29 1 189 200 10.5209/hics.92116 The images in the media discourse of the information on Artificial Intelligence in Spanish media (2017-2021). A gender perspective analysis https://revistas.ucm.es/index.php/HICS/article/view/95830
This paper aims to study the photographs published by Spanish digital newspapers (2017-2021) on Artificial Intelligence (AI), with particular attention to gender differences and the role of women. The final sample is 6,466 images. As a result, it is worth highlighting the underrepresentation of women, which is in itself a feedback of the gender segregation that currently exists in this sector. From a qualitative point of view, the images that promote gender stereotypes respond to three key concepts: the sexual division of labor, present in the design of robotics and AI; the sexual objectification of women by associating an image of femininity to sex robots; and, additionally, the underrepresentation of women and their lack of prominence in the scientific advances reported.
Xiaoyu Gai Clara Sainz de Baranda Andújar Yanna G. Little more than thirty years later they had disappeared. Some press companies looked for a rescue board in the jump to the morning edition. And they found it. Today, six headers survive from those that were founded to be read at sunset: Diario de León, El Adelantado de Segovia, El Diario de Ávila, Extremadura, Lanza and Última Hora. This paper derives from a doctoral thesis now expanded with novel contributions, such as the study of Lanza, a digital newspaper. The methodology used is based on the content analysis of newspapers, in qualitative interviews, in the collection of data in archives, libraries and newspaper archives, translated into the preparation of tables and graphs, and in the bibliographic review.
José Luis Zurita Milena Trenta Lucas Morales Copyright (c) 2024 Historia y Comunicación Social 2024-05-29 2024-05-29 29 1 219 228 10.5209/hics.95832 Communicative reaction or proaction: A diachronic analysis of parliamentary interventions on migration https://revistas.ucm.es/index.php/HICS/article/view/93392
From the perspective of corpus linguistics, this paper proposes a quantitative/qualitative methodology to perform a critical and diachronic análisis of parliamentary communication on migratory phenomena (specifically, about refugees). After the introduction (in section 1), section 2 describes the basic concepts by Zapata-Barrero and Wodak, with which the analytical method is constructed. Section 3 describes the texts, tools and phases of the article. In section 4, the model is tested by examining the collocations around the node REFUG* in the course of three historical phases of the Spanish Congress of Deputies. The article concludes by confirming the effectiveness of the proposed analytical model.
María Calzada Pérez Copyright (c) 2024 Historia y Comunicación Social 2024-05-29 2024-05-29 29 1 229 240 10.5209/hics.93392
