Entertainment Education: the debate on issues of public interest on social media devoted to television fiction
Abstract
This article analyzes online comments about issues of public interest made by female viewers of Spanish television fiction on forums and social networks devoted to the shows. Stemming from the concept of Entertainment Education (EE) to define the educational content of the fiction, this study aims to determine the resonance of the topics discussed among the users. The study reveals that the format, genre and settings of programs drive the engagement of social audiences and highlights that digital discourses by fans open new spaces for public debate. The research did not find gender assertions despite the contradictory messages found within the fictional programming.
