The dispute over ownership. Cooperatives and labor societies in the Spanish press in the Transition and the Great Recession

Keywords: history of the press, media ownership, labour conflicts, journalism

Abstract

Crises in the journalism sector have led to certain forms of labour associationism and hence to individual or collective self-employment projects. The aim of the article is to map the experiences of cooperatives and press labour societies in Spain and analyse some of their relevant cases. The study focuses on two moments of rupture in the history of Spanish media and journalism: the first, the end of the dictatorship and the Transition, and the second, the Great Recession of 2008. It seeks to know the causes, processes and trajectory of these journalistic projects. This is an under-researched topic in the Spanish communication studies, and it is yet to be addressed through the lens of labour conflict and class struggle theory.
