Keywords: Fishing, food, rural economy, Late antiquity, Early Middle Ages, Visigoths, Hispania

Abstract

Through this study we approach the treatment of Hispanic fishing in early medieval society. In particular, we will make a historiographical review through the main historical and legislative sources to understand the role and social configuration of the exploitation of fishery resources. Likewise, we turn to archaeological record to better understand the productive process of both fishing and conservation. Finally, we highlight the role of fish in the diet of Hispanic society.
