Between trace and decoration in late Gothic architecture. Back to the problem of Diego de Riaño (ca.1490-1534) and collaborators

Keywords: Renaissance Gothic, Charles V, Lower Andalusia, pan-European look, Diego de Riaño

Abstract

In the begining of the reign of Charles V, the architecture in Europe was dominated by the "modern use" formulas imposed by the late Gothic language. At the same time, the decorative and formal Italian language is used as a symbolic system of reference for power. The architects develops their ability to adapt to this Renaissance Gothic. In the Lower Andalusia region, this chapter receives special interest from the hand of stonemason such as Diego de Riaño (ca. 1490-1534). It is a time without paradigm where the polycentric idea in the reception of antiquites and modern formulas compels us to seek  that pan-European look in its important buildings.
