Matter in Duns Scotus and Suárez. Some considerations on Lectura II, d. 12 and DM XIII

Keywords: Scotus, Suárez, prime matter, positive entity of matter, new ontological statute of matter

Abstract

After an initial premise of historical contextualization, the article presents Suárez's theory of matter, contained above all in the Disputatio metaphysica XIII, as a renewal and conceptual and terminological improvement of the Scotist theory of prime matter exposed in Lectura II, d. 12. Based on the Scotist idea of matter as aliquid (something) endowed with a positive entitas in so far as founded on the theological notion of creation, Suárez elaborates a new ontological statute of matter, of a non-Aristotelian nature, on new theoretical bases: the hipostatization of the prime matter, the immediate inhesion of the quantity on matter, the loss of unity of the material substance (and the appeal of the mode of substantial union to remedy it) and the distinction between entitative extension and quantitative extension.
