“Between eternity and time”: clothing imagery in Hadewijch of Brabant’s writings (XIII)
Abstract
Hadewijch of Brabant, 13th-century beguine and mystic from the Low Countries, is a very important reference for the religious thought of the Middle Ages. In fact, her literary legacy attests itself as an outstanding pillar in medieval female mysticism, becoming fruitful at the most diverse levels. The main purpose of this article is to analyze the literary work of the flemish author from a very specific point of view: the clothing imagery. Thus, I assay how imagery of clothing is articulated as a mystical element, and in order to establish itself as a dialogue between materiality and immateriality along the path towards God, ending up founding a literary expression positioned “between eternity and time”.
