An Incident of Antisemitism in the Cathedral Chapter of Burgos at the End of 15th Century
Abstract
Although in the 15th century there was a good assimilation of the Jewish convert group in the society of Burgos and in the civil and ecclesiastical structures of the city, sometimes it is possible to find some antisemitic manifestations, sign of the social tensions, especially when in the eighties the Inquisition was established in Burgos. In this work we study one of these antisemitic manifestations, the violent verbal confrontation held in June 26, 1489, between Fernando Sánchez de Frías, canon at the Burgos cathedral, and Pedro Márquez, layman resident in the city, a confrontation that it is possible to know and study in detail by the testimony of several witnesses, kept written in the document studied and transcribed in this paper.
