The Gregorian Sacred

The Political as Religiosity

Keywords: Pope Gregory VII, Sacred, Politics

Abstract

From the second half of the eleventh century onwards the figure of the Pope Gregory VII became the subject of a growing repertoire of stories about miracles, visions and spiritual prowess. The relations with the sacred attributed to the Pope and allies are described with unique characteristics, conditioned by the institutional reality of the Roman church. With the support of a sociological theory of religion, we propose an attempt to explain historically certain central features of this "Gregorian sacred”: the combativeness, the political orientation and the utopian dimension.
