Theological Aesthetics and Figurative Writing: Joaquim of Fiore

Keywords: Joaquim of Fiore, theological aesthetics, figurative writing, maiestas domini, prophetism

Abstract

Joaquín de Fiore is a special and very significant author in the late Middle Ages. His theological thought is not only notable for its Trinitarian and eschatological proposals, but also for its own textual form. We analyse the theological aesthetics of the Calabrian abbot through his historical prophetic thought and two significant figures: the tree and the maiestas domini, pointing out the context of his figurative language and his novelty.
