Abstract
The aim of this paper is to study in depth Dahl’s last work. It has been one of the most successful works among kids and adults: Matilda. As Dieter Petzold states, it is not a realistic work but, as his other works, a traditional fairy tale combined with a certain dose of realism, enough satire and a lot of exaggeration. In most of Dahl’s works, satire goes directly towards adults, with the exception of those characters with a positive touch. In the case of Matilda satire is not against adults but against specific behaviour. All these ingredients result in the caustic humour so characteristic in Roald Dahl which has caused scandal in many adults. The exaggerations that Dahl uses in his works serve as a comical distance, which minimize the strength of fear as well as of fantasy.
