María de Zayas y Madrid: la forja de un binomio indivisible
Abstract
This article analyses the authorial identity construction of Maria de Zayas y Sotomayor as the Madrid writer par excellence in the 17th century. Editorial, personal, biographical and fictitious mentions in relation to the city of Madrid have been studied and gathered in this paper. It has been verified that the note “native of Madrid”, seen in many of the covers of her novels, are not included in all of the editions, as concluded after studying all of them. We have researched the poems and laudatory references that she received from other authors, focusing only on those that allude to Madrid and its relationship with the writer. Likewise, all the praise she gave to her contemporary authors has been ascertained and showcased along those she received in a dialogue fashion. Also, we have gathered every reference to Madrid that Zayas provides in her fiction. A quantitative and qualitative analysis of these extracts has been carried out, in order to show the importance of the author’s home town in her writings. Once this work is completed, it will be possible to appreciate to what extent each of the aspects contributes to shape the image of Zayas as a Madrilenian female author of her era.
