Abstract

My main purpose in this paper is to defend and to illustrate the influence of El maestro de danzar, a comedy by Lope de Vega, on the homonymous play by Calderón, an issue which has divided opinion among critics. A careful study of both texts shows undeniable similarities, which demonstrate the Calderón’s debt to Lope. In the following article I will describe in detail which passages have been rewritten and reused in Calderón’s play. At the same time, I will deal with the circumstances and reasons that may have led Calderón to accomplish this rewriting process, which the playwright did not conceal, but he openly stated by using the same title as Lope.
