Nacionalismo y estilo en la España de Falla: de la música al arte del jardín
Abstract
The debate regarding the modern definition of “Spanishness” that took place during the Silver Age (1898-1936) was also present in landscape architecture. This comparative study establishes the main stylistic parallelisms associating Spanish music, represented by Manuel de Falla, with landscape architects such as Forestier and Winthuysen. This analysis reveals the existence of two paradigms based on their corresponding historical references: a neo-Arabic model, of French origin and late-romantic influences; and a neo-classical model presented as an alternative from positions close to the avant-garde.
The formal analysis of Falla’s Nights in the Gardens of Spain and Harpsichord Concerto reveal clear concomitances with the most representative gardens of these models: the Parque de María Luisa and the restoration of the Jardín de la Moncloa. New keys will thus be provided for the definition of the wide collective imagination embracing the music of this period.
