Fray Ambrosio de Montesino y el repertorio navideño cancioneril, con especial atención al bifolio carp. 3/16 del Archivo Histórico Provincial de Orense
Abstract
The timely discovery of a new manuscript featuring Christmas chansonnier repertory expands on the information available on this subject during a relatively early period, as is that of the reign of the Catholic Monarchs. In spite of its fragmentary nature, the fact that it contains a hitherto unknown villancico (carol) by Juan de Valera, who was maestro di cappella at Seville Cathedral between 1505 and 1507, and another by Pedro de Escobar, his successor in the post, calls for a revision of some of the clichéd information about Christmas carols, as well as the role played by leading members of the Franciscan order in the origins of the genre.Downloads
