The expression of the future in ELE textbooks: forms, uses and metalanguage
Abstract
Given that there is already a study on the future in ELE grammars, carried out by Martínez-Atienza and Zamorano Aguilar (2020a), here we will carry out an analysis, in nine ELE textbooks, of the different values attributed to the grammatical future and the present subjunctive, which refer to both prototypical and non-prototypical future/futurity. In describing these values, the terminology used will be observed and their relevance to the learners’ metalinguistic training and the development of their reflective capacity will be assessed (García Folgado 2022; Pastor Cesteros 2005). In relation to the level declared by the textbooks analysed, it is necessary to put them in parallel with the provisions of the (PCIC) and check their degree of representation. As they are textbooks, the quantity and quality of space devoted to the future of indicative and the present of subjunctive in their respective units will be taken into account.
