The effects of COVID-19 in clickbaits headlines of Huffpost and Upsocl: sensationalising the pandemic

Abstract

The appearance of COVID-19 and its terrible consequences found in the sensationalism of clickbait headlines (CB) a key expression to accompany the unstoppable flow of dramatic and terrible news. Even though this worrying situation could seem to stop the creation of headlines related to superficial and banal issues, in fact media related to the so-called hard news –in this case, a serious content related to health– show the main point of its sensationalistic headlines. This was a consequence of the fusion produced by illness, unknowledge, surprise, fear and confusion, an excellent topic that could let the multiplication of this kind of headlines, which are shifted in this occasion to the area of a terrible situation worldwide and with formal characteristics which partially coincide and partially differ with those conventional CB´s.
