Abstract

The aim of this paper is to offer an analysis of the morphological, syntactic, and functional configuration of a very specific kind of idiomatic words that have not been studied in Hispanic studies –as far as we know: loanwords from Italian language that survive inserted in Spanish idioms. First, the concepts «idiomatic word» and «loanword» will be defined, and the methodological procedures to compile this kind of words with a Spanish general dictionary, such as the Diccionario de la lengua española, will be clarified. Then an etymological, morphological, syntactic, and functional analysis of the three words and idioms of this corpus –«en berlina», «al dente», and «a ufo» will be offered. The main feature of idiomatic loanwords from Italian is that these words do not present special adaptation in Spanish regarding their morphology. Regarding their syntactic and functional configuration, it can be verified that they are a very homogeneous group of prepositional phrases and in addition their function is basically adverbial.
