Women’s and Men’s Lexical Innovations in the Spanish Press: Differences in Usage Motivation
Abstract
The line of research devoted to lexical innovation and genre initiated by Cañete-González in 2016 showed quantitative and qualitative differences among women and men regarding the use of neologisms: men use more neological units and their lexical innovations present a more expressive function. Precisely, this article goes into detail about the study of the communicative function of neologisms of both genres in order to observe if from a quantitative point of view women and men use neologisms with different purposes. For this reason, the six criteria of analysis established by Llopart-Saumell (2016), which are based on different linguistic and extralinguistic features of the neologism, were applied to a corpus made up of 118 neological units extracted from journalistic texts written by women and men. The results showed a similar use of denominative neologisms among both genres, but a greater use of stylistic neologisms by men.
