Abstract

The aim of this article is twofold: on one hand, to analyse the characters of the TV fiction series Brigada Costa del Sol from a sociolinguistic perspective and, on the other, to assess the impact on the audience, which opinion was shared on Twitter. We took as an example the language used by seven main characters of the series and it was clear that most of their pronunciation traits were associated with a low social status. This contributes to consolidate and spread the typical Andalusian stereotypes, which are rooted in the collective imaginary. Finally, 149 tweets were published with the hashtag “#BrigadaCostadelSol andaluz”, which had a common negative perception: an artificial and exaggerated accent was criticised, not considered representative of the Andalusian model at all
