Variation and transformations in legal phraseological units: the importance of their representation in tools for translators
Abstract
The present article reflects on the importance of incorporating the variation and the transformative patterns —including their degrees of fixation and specialization— of verb-noun constructions (VNCs) into terminographic tools intended for translators so that they may improve the quality of their final product and acquire terminophraseological knowledge in the field of specialization. To this end, after an introduction, we will briefly present the problems that phraseological units pose to legal translation. Subsequently, the methodology of the analysis, carried out within the framework of the CRIMO project, is presented and illustrated through the analysis of VNCs in Spanish. Finally, we will discuss the linguistic, conceptual and pragmatic implications of the results. In a second phase of the project, following the comparative analysis, these results shall be reflected in a digital terminographic tool.
