Abstract

This work intends to construct a conceptualization of the linguistic-communicative nature of emblems, autonomous gestures of verbal language (for example, the gesture where the finger is rotated next to the temple with the meaning 'to be crazy', is an emblem). This conceptualization is done through the study of different linguistic approaches, providing information about the multidimensional configuration of these gestures: through a cognitive approach we explain the association of the signifier and the meaning, in the pragmatic dimension we describe different speech acts and communicative functions that these gestures play in communication; and in the sociolinguistic dimension, we collect information about the social context in which these gestures occur. From a systematization of the previous approaches, we propose a figure for the emblems’ visual representation that can be used in theoretical investigations and works applied to the teaching of second languages or foreign languages.
