Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyse how and when the concept of utterance first appears in the Spanish grammar, understanding it as a unit that integrated elements beyond the sentence level. Subsequently, we point out the importance of this unit in the origin of macrosyntax, a discipline which distinguishes two dimensions; utterance structure and utterance combinatory. Finally, we define two basic category types, relevant for macrosyntax -discourse markers and discourse operators- taking into account several examples.
