Speaking on the Argentina-Paraguay border: The unstressed pronominal system

Abstract
This paper analyzes the linguistic changes documented in the Spanish unstressed pronominal system of the third person, spoken in the Argentina-Paraguay border. These contact-induced indirect linguistic changes are translated as neutralization of gender and case distinguished by the pronouns lo-los/la-las. The consequence is a simplified system where pronoun le, used for marking both grammatical functions direct and indirect object, alternates with Ø, used to codify P arguments. The intense bilingual situation among Spanish, Guaraní and other native languages over more than 500 years, allows analyzing the linguistic variation observed in the Spanish spoken in this border zone within the Linguistic Contact framework, a key factor in the grammatical change that this paper analyzes.Downloads
