Approach to the paradigm of relative adverbs of place in highbrow Spanish in the 20th and 21st centuries: The struggle between adonde and a donde
Abstract
In this work we intend to study the functioning of the system of relative adverbs of place in Spanish for the expression of locative values. Currently, the paradigm of relative adverbs of place in Spanish is preferably based on the preposition + relative adverb scheme donde, although highbrow use shows a certain preference for the employment of the synthetic form a donde, compared to the analytical group a donde. Our analysis of a corpus from the 20th and 21st centuries will allow us to recognize the main grammatical mechanisms that guarantee the stability of the system of relative adverbs of place today (among which the anteposition of a preposition and the presence of an explicit antecedent in sentential context) while explaining less conventional uses.
