Characterisations of Manuela Carmena as Mayoress of Madrid in different audiences
Abstract
The first female mayors in Spain date back to 1924. Since then, progress has been made in the occupation of positions of power by women, but gender stereotypes still persist in the minds of the public. In the case of Manuela Carmena, former mayor of Madrid, her prestige was unquestionable until she assumed political office. In order to analyse the correlation between the representations that the progressive and conservative media made of Manuela Carmena and the mental images that different audiences had of her, two focus groups were carried out. We found that gender stereotypes still shape beliefs about women's abilities to hold positions of power, validating phenomena such as Think Manager-Think Male or status beliefs
